Following the seventh beta release of macOS Big Sur, Apple has just released the new Xcode 12.2 beta for developers — even though Xcode 12.1 has never been released. What’s more interesting is that the Xcode 12.2 release notes explicitly mention compatibility with iOS 14.2 and other software updates that haven’t been officially announced yet.

Xcode is the tool used by developers to create apps for iOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS. A new version of Xcode is required to build apps for new versions of Apple’s operating systems, as Apple released Xcode 12.0 this week with the iOS 14 SDK.

What’s New in Xcode 11.2 Beta Overview. Overview -Xcode 11.2 beta includes SDKs for iOS 13.2, macOS Catalina 10.15, watchOS 6.1, and tvOS 13.2. Apple quietly released the Xcode 12.2 beta today on the Apple Developer portal, which can now be downloaded by developers. While skipping Xcode 12.1 may seem unusual, the release notes for Xcode 12.2 mention full support for iOS 14.2, iPadOS 14.2, tvOS 14.2, and watchOS 7.1 — of which none are available either as public releases or developer beta.

Xcode 12.2 beta includes SDKs for iOS 14.2, iPadOS 14.2, tvOS 14.2, watchOS 7.1, and macOS Big Sur 11. The Xcode 12.2 beta release supports on-device debugging for iOS 9 and later, tvOS 9 and later, and watchOS 2 and later. Xcode 12.2 beta requires a Mac with Apple silicon running macOS Big Sur 11 or later, or an Intel-based Mac running macOS Catalina 10.15.4 or later.

Apple quickly took the release notes of the Xcode 12.2 beta down, but the software is still available to developers for now. Previous rumors have suggested that iPhone 12 will be released next month with iOS 14.1, as iOS 14.0 is now available to all users. However, this may suggest that iOS 14.1 may arrive prior to the new iPhones, which could be shipped with iOS 14.2.

Known Issues

Watch apps might fail to launch on Apple Watch from Xcode with the error: ”Failed to use existing instance 0 for app with bundle identifier: com.apple.Carousel.” This can occur when the iPhone and Apple Watch are too far from the wifi network base station and have a weak signal, the wifi network is congested, or the network doesn’t support peer-to-peer connections. (51431622)Workaround: Disable wifi on the Apple Watch in Settings to force use of bluetooth, or set up a separate 2.4GHz wifi base station and disable auto-connecting to the ‘bad’ wifi network.

Fixed an issue with UITabBarController where decoding an instance from a storyboard would create extra views at the left end of the screen. New Features

simctl video recording now produces smaller video files, supports HEIC compression, and takes advantage of hardware encoding support where available.
